What is about leather jackets that are so cool on motorcycles? Is it the sleek look they have while cruising down the streets? Is it the tough style that seems so cowboy-like? Or is it just that they're super practical for bike riding?
Actually, it's probably a bit of all those elements. Leather has a time-honored reputation for the cowboys, the bad boys, and the tough guys. When you see the hero or the villain in leather, that leather is making a statement all its own.
And they just look cool. You can count on people turning their heads as you cruise by on your rumbling motorcycle especially when you're in leather. The look and reputation of combining leather and motorcycles probably got all its luster from the old James Dean movies and the days of the Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli.
But, there is the practical reason for leather on motorcycles. If you're unfortunate enough to have an accident on your motorcycle, you don't have the benefit of a frame protecting you like a car or truck has. Leather isn't as strong as metal, but it does a decent job of protecting your fragile and easily mangled skin.
Metal would be better, but if you surrounded your bike with too much metal, it ceases being the freedom-loving motorcycle that you wanted. And it would look pretty silly if we wore the metal. Then we'd all look like knights and ladies in armor and we'd still lose the feeling of the air stoking our free-feeling cruises.
It's pretty cool really. What started out as a protective measure has turned into a definition of style and coolness. Ride on!
